Scholars GeoPortal is your tool to access geospatial datasets licensed by your university library. The GeoPortal includes land-based vector data (water, cultural features, etc.), census geography, orthophotography, and more!

Scholars GeoPortal is a project of the Ontario Council of University Libraries, and was made possible with the support of the Government of Ontario through its OntarioBuys initiative. Scholars GeoPortal was developed by Scholars Portal and launched in March 2012.

Specific Data Providers Terms of Use

Scholars GeoPortal provides access to data which OCUL members license from a variety of data providers. Before viewing or downloading restricted data, you will be asked to agree to the following Conditions of Use Agreement:

"I am a faculty member, staff member, or student at an Ontario University or a subscribing university outside of Ontario, and agree to the following terms of use: These data products are provided for the exclusive purposes of teaching, learning, academic research and publishing, and/or planning of educational services within the University. I am prohibited from using these data products in the pursuit of any commercial or income-generating venture either privately, or under the auspices of the University. The distribution of any data obtained under this agreement through sharing, sale, donation, transfer or exchange is strictly prohibited. These data products may contain Postal Code0M Data copied under license from Canada Post Corporation."

In addition, in using the data available via Scholars GeoPortal, you are agreeing to the general Scholars Portal Terms of Use.

Scholars Portal Terms of Use

Scholars Portal is a service of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL). OCUL is a consortium of 21 academic libraries in the province of Ontario, acting under the authority of the Council of Ontario Universities.

OCUL has licensed millions of articles, electronic books, numeric and geospatial data files for the use of researchers and students of its member libraries. These resources are made available through various Scholars Portal services. Some Scholars Portal services are also available to Canadian academic institutions outside of Ontario on a subscription basis, if appropriate content licenses are already in place. Access to and use of Scholars Portal and the content it provides is governed by the terms and conditions below. By using Scholars Portal, you agree to all the terms and conditions of this User Agreement. This User Agreement is subject to change without notice.

Who may use the data

Access to Scholars Portal is limited to 'Authorized Users'. Authorized Users are defined as educators, students and other staff members who currently are affiliated with an Ontario university or with a subscribing university outside of Ontario. Authorized Users must not share user IDs and passwords or enable anyone who is not an Authorized User to gain access to Scholars Portal and the content it houses.

Permitted uses

OCUL grants you a limited license to the content on Scholars Portal. You may search, view, download, copy, print, save, display, share with other Authorized Users, and post links to specific content to other Authorized Users. In some cases, you may also republish content if you have prior permission from the copyright holder of that content. You may do these things for the purposes of teaching, academic research, analysis, and/or planning of educational services within your university.

Prohibited uses

Without the specific consent of the copyright holder, Scholars Portal content cannot be: 1. Re-sold 2. Used with any product, service or application that you create or distribute 3. Displayed or made available on any other website or server without permission.

Warranty disclaimer

OCUL maintains Scholars Portal as a tool to support the academic community at participating institutions. However, OCUL provides no warranty and makes no claims as to the reliability, accuracy or integrity of the content it licenses from third parties. Data may contain errors, may not be current, and may omit important information. OCUL also provides no warranty as to the uninterrupted, timely, secure or error-free functioning of its website.

Liability disclaimer

OCUL employees, managers and other officers do not assume any liability for damages caused directly or indirectly by any action or inaction based on the content, information, products or services or other material made available through Scholars Portal, or by its non-availability.

Termination

Any breach of these Terms of Use could result in your use being terminated. At its sole discretion, OCUL may suspend or terminate, temporarily or permanently, your use for any reason, with or without notice to you.

Governing law

Use of Scholars Portal is governed by the federal and provincial legislation in force in the Province of Ontario, Canada.

Copyright

OCUL reserves the intellectual property rights pertaining to its website's graphics, navigation and search tool design.

Privacy

Scholars Portal is a service of the Ontario Council of University Libraries(OCUL).OCUL is a consortium of 21 academic libraries in the province of Ontario and acts under the authority of the Council of Ontario Universities.

OCUL and your local university library, respect your privacy. All information provided while using any Scholars Portal service(such as your name, email address, library barcode, or department) is stored in databases housed at the University of Toronto, which managesScholars Portal services on behalf of OCUL. This data is collected for the purposes of registration, allowing access to the Scholars Portal systems,and for statistical reporting to the OCUL board of directors, funding agencies, and your local institution. Your data can only be accessed by Scholars Portal staff and by designated library staff from your own institution.Personal information that you provide in order to use Scholars Portal services will be protected in accordance with FIPPA,the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

As the service provider to OCUL with respect to Scholars Portal, the University of Toronto respects your privacy.Personal information that you provide to the University is collected pursuant to section 2(14) of theUniversity of Toronto Act, 1971. It is collected for the purpose of administering admission, registration, academic programs, university-related student activities, activities of student societies, financial assistance and awards,graduation and university advancement, and for the purpose of statistical reporting to government agencies.At all times it will be protected in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
