Waterpower Potential Site Coordinate system: 4269 - "NAD83" Abstract: A site which has the potential to be used for hydroelectric power generation. This data set was created using information identified in the 1985 Ontario's Waterpower Sites publication. The information assembled combined the effort of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Energy and at the time Ontario Hydro. Supplementary tables can be used and are available for download from the additional documentation section. This layer is part of what was known as the OMNR Non-Fundamental Dataset.

  The list of Water Powers in Ontario was first published in 1925. It was revised and reprinted in 1931, and again in 1946. Since then, there have been many changes in both the number of power sites that have been developed and the number of small water power installations that have been removed. The locational accuracy is questionable concerning this data set but efforts are under way to improve the data.

  
  

  Ontario Hydro and Ministry of Natural Resources: Ontario's Water Power Sites: The purpose of the list is to identify potential hydraulic energy sites in the Province and to give preliminary estimates only of the amount of energy available. Note: The energy estimates shown should only be used as a guide as to the possible potential of each site. When investigating possible sites for development, more accurate measurements of head and drainage area and more detailed analysis of streamflows must be made to determine the energy potential more precisely.
