Mapping is derived from a variety of sources (GPS points, digitized paper maps of various scales ranging from 1:20,000 to 1:250,000). Prior to 1998, only fires greater than 200 hectares were mapped. Since 1998, fires greater than 40 hectares have been mapped If adequate mapping exists for fires less than 40 hectares in size, they will be included in this Data Class. Prior to 1998, Forest Response Objectives were not recorded. For fires over 40 hectares that were not mapped, a buffer is generated that is proportionate to the recorded fire final size documented by the fire crewboss. The Fire Disturbance Area does not include unburned areas, or reflect tree mortality, severity of the forest fire, or any other impacts to the forest cover. The mapped Fire Disturbance Areas from the early decades of the 20th Century are coarse. There is not any Fire Weather Index information for fires between 1960 and 1962 and a value of 0.1 has been entered into NRVIS. These values will be changed to blank once the new version of NRVIS is released which is scheduled for October, 2004.
